She wrote back that she
was about to get on a plane in D.C. and her connecting flight was scheduled to
arrive at Newark Airport in 90 minutes. Throughout our 15-year friendship, a
remarkable range of words have passed between the two of us. This “meet me at
the diner in Terminal C” thread was a new one.
In my inaugural blog post, I alluded to having more outlandish stories than most people I know. The “most people I know” qualification had this Jersey-bound friend in mind. She is someone whose stories can consistently top mine.
After a lively dinner, I dropped her off at her next flight’s boarding gate. I wanted to stand by the window and wave goodbye as her plane backed up and started taxiing toward the runway - that’s what my dad used to do with me, during the feel-free-to-escort-your-party-directly-to-the-gate era. But the line of passengers waiting to board my party’s connecting flight was as long as a Grateful Dead show and I needed to race downstairs to confirm that my suitcase – which had been sitting, unattended, in the baggage claim area for 4 hours - hadn’t become the subject of another outlandish tale.
Outlandish tales make for the best existences ;) I had to wait for 30 minutes (along with all the other passengers) to get my luggage on a recent journey. I still wonder what the hell they were doing with it.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it's wonderful to be able to catch up with old, entertaining friends :)
I love when things like that happen. I have a friend that is a flight attendant and sometimes we even run into each other in random airports.
ReplyDeleteThere are many kinds of friendship: the "once a month coffee friendship," the "everyday on the telephone friendship," the "Facebook friendship," the "BFF friendship," and so on. However, Roving Retorter, you are introducing the "meeting at airport friendship." Yes, I realize this lady is one of your "besties," so meeting at an airport is not at the core of the relationship. But your musings inspire the thought that this could be the theme of an excellent novel, or at least, a short story. Imagine, two people organizing their lives around crossing paths at airports around the world...
ReplyDelete{Melinda} Love that story. I acutally met a dear friend of mine ON an airplane. We were strangers who struck up a conversation and still keep in touch 7 years later. :) My husband calls her "Airplane Kelly." :) Glad you were able to have a sweet and unexpected reunion.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! Glad you were able to reconnect with a friend. Happy SITS Day to you!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great story... the closest I have is the day my sister and I bumped into each other on the beach several hours from home... we were both weekending at the same place separately and had no idea the other would be there! Family Communication FAIL... it made a blog post as well!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day!
You write beautifully! It's so nice to meet you from SITS. Hope you find lots more new friends today. :)
